NEW COMMIT: Hungary’s Adel Juhasz has announced her verbal commitment to swim for Virginia Tech beginning in the fall of 2018. Juhasz has been swimming since 2005, still under her first coach. In 2016 Juhasz achieved the Olympic A standard in the 800 freestyle.

This summer Juhasz finished 10th in the European Junior Open Water Championships 10K. She was fourth in the 5K in the summer of 2016. In 2014 Juhasz won the 200 fly at the European Junior Championships. The following summer she was fifth in the 1500 at World Juniors.

Last year Juhasz was awarded the Good Student and Athlete of the Year award, which she explained, “is an award in Hugary, which is given for those athletes who have great sport results during the year and his/her grade point average is above 4.7.”

Her best times include (converted to SCY):

  • 400 Free SCM 4:07.83 (4:45.74)
  • 800 Free SCM 8:26.32 (9:43.78)
  • 400 Free LCM 4:12.82 (4:41.13)
  • 800 Free LCM 8:33.50 (9:40.25)
  • 1500 Free LCM 16:22.69 (16:07.94)
  • 100 Fly LCM 1:00.38 (53.55)
  • 200 Fly LCM 2:10.93 (1:56.65)

Those long course conversions are a bit quicker than the short course ones. While some success will depend on how Juhasz makes the transition to short course yards, she should be a significant contributor for the Hokies. A 16:07 would have finished fourth in the mile at ACCS last year. In the 500 free a 4:41 would have been fifth, while a 1:56 200 fly also would have slipped into the A final.

She told Swimming World about her decision to join the Hokies,

“I chose this school, because the coaches supported me and there are two other Hungarian national team members swimming there. I have heard a lot of great things from them and I am very excited to join the team. I can’t wait to be a real Hokie!”

Juhasz joins a Class of 2022 that includes international talents Julia Bruneau, Loulou Vos, and Natalia Fryckowska as well as Americans Brooke LeftwichAnna Landon, Jennifer HauserLauren MeekerRachael HolpAbby Larson, and Alex Slayton.
