Individual Highlight of the Week: Andy Greenhalgh 1,000 freestyle

This week’s Division III Performance of the Week is Johns Hopkins University’s Andy Greenhalgh in the 1,000 freestyle against Division I Georgetown and William & Mary. His time of 9:27.65 was enough to win the event and give him the top time in the country so far this season. His swim would have put him at the top of last year’s rankings as well, as the fastest time posted in 2015-2016 belonged to Joshua Graves of MIT in 9:30.14. Last season, Greenhalgh’s fastest 1,000 was 9:36.23 against The College of New Jersey. While the swim was still off his best of 9:17.99 from January of 2015, the is an incredibly dominant swim for the second weekend of October. Greenhalgh also won the 500 freestyle in 4:34.91, just half a second off the NCAA B standard. His efforts helped send JHU past Georgetown in the overall scores 180-82.

Runners-up:

  • Michelle Wang, freshman, Johns Hopkins University- Wang swam a 2:07.91 in the 200 backstroke on Saturday in a tri-meet with Georgetown and William & Mary. Her time puts her at the top of this event so far this season for Division III. She was one of three JHU female swimmers to have a top-three finish against the two Division I powerhouses. She also placed fifth in the 100 backstroke in 59.81.
  • Julien Zhu, freshman, New York University – Zhu made her collegiate swimming debut by winning the 200 butterfly in NYU’s meet against SUNY-Cortland. She took the event by eight seconds and was just about one full second off the NCAA B standard. Her time puts her first among Division III athletes so far this season. She also won the 200 IM in 2:11.48.

Race of the Week: Mac Robertson vs. Chris Dabrowski 1,000 freestyle

Fresh off his Division III victory at the CSCAA Open Water National Championships, Albion freshman Mac Robertson kept his win streak alive after winning the 1,000 freestyle on Saturday by just a narrow margin. Wabash sophomore Chris Dabrowski gave the freshman a run for his money as the two finished the race with times of 10:23.09 and 10:23.29, respectively. Dabrowski led the race early on and had the upper hand at the 500, 5:08.26 to Robertson’s 5:08.82. But Robertson’s endurance proved strong again as he was able to get his hand on the wall first in the end as he out-split Dabrowski 27.06 to 28.26 on the last 50. The pair also took the top two spots in the 500 freestyle. Robertson claimed the shorter event as well in 5:02.58. His efforts helped Albion win the meet 213-87. Be sure to look for this duo for the rest of the season and the following two years.

Their time of 1:33.47 was just off William & Mary’s winning time of 1:33.37. However, it is also important to note that although at a separate location, the NYU men’s team swam a 1:33.84 in this event. For reference, the B cut is a 1:31.79, so these are very solid times for the first meet of the season.
  • Alex Horman 100 IM vs. Division II Hillsdale- Albion freshman Alex Horman played a crucial role in her team’s 158-133 victory over Division II Hillsdale. As the meet came down to the last two events, Horman pulled through in the 100 IM, taking the event in 1:03.72, just .24 seconds over Hillsdale’s Danielle Lebleu.
