Bowe Becker Joins Minnesota Swimming Staff as Volunteer Assistant

Olympic gold medalist Bowe Becker is joining the staff as a volunteer assistant coach for the Golden Gophers swimming and diving programs, head coach Kelly Kremer announced Monday.

“We are excited to have Bowe on staff this season,” Kremer said. “His wealth of experience as a professional athlete will benefit the current team greatly.”

A 2019 graduate of Minnesota, Becker swam the third leg of the 4x100m freestyle relay at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics in an impressive 47.44 as Team USA won in a time of 3:08.97.

With his performance, Bowe Becker became the seventh Gopher in history to medal at the Olympic Games, the sixth to do so for Team USA and the fourth to earn gold, joining Minnesota legends Virgil Luken (1964), Walter Richardson (1964) and David Plummer (2016). His win also brought the Gophers program their second gold medal in as many Olympic meets.

Becker, who will continue to train at Minnesota through 2024, was an eight-time All American and NCAA runner-up during his collegiate career. He took second in the 100 free at NCAAs as a senior, and finished third and fourth in the 50 free in 2018 and 2019, respectively.

The Las Vegas, Nev., native was a three-time Big Ten champion, capturing the 50 free title in 2018 before repeating in 2019 and adding the 100 free, as well.

Bowe Becker holds school short-course and long-course records for both the 50 and 100 free, in addition to being part of the school record relays in the 400 free, and 200 and 400 medleys.
