Big Ten Women’s Championships Day 4 Prelims: Phoebe Bacon Aims for 200 Back Title

The 2024 Big Ten Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships continued on Saturday from Purdue University in West Lafayette, Ind., with the Day 4 prelims.

The Day 4 events are the 200 backstroke, 100 freestyle, 200 breaststroke and 200 butterfly.

Big Ten Women’s 200 Backstroke

No surprise to start the final day as Wisconsin senior Phoebe Bacon took the top seed in the 200 backstroke. She was an Olympian in this even in Tokyo and has been an NCAA title challenger all four years with the Badgers.

Bacon got to the wall in 1:53.53, a minute slower than her seed time, setting her up for a strong final.

Northwestern grad student Ayla Spitz took the second seed in 1:52.772, followed by Indiana junior Kacey McKenna (1:53.57).

Big Ten Women’s 100 Freestyle

Indiana junior Anna Peplowski took the top seed in the 100 free with a 47.45, while there was a stunning three-way tie for the second seed.

Ohio State’s Katherine Zenick, Amy Fulmer and Indiana’s Kristin Paegle all finished in 47.79 to tie for the second seed.

Big Ten Women’s 200 Breaststroke

Ohio State grad student Josephine Panitz was a half second ahead of the field to claim the top seed in the women’s 200 breaststroke. She got to the wall in 2:08.66.

Indiana junior Brearna Crawford was second in 2:09.06, followed by Wisconsin sophomore Hazal Ozkan in 2:10.01.

Hannah Bach, who won the 100 breast, took the fifth seed in 2:11.14.

Minnesota senior Megan Van Berkom had just enough at the end of the race to claim the top seed.

She closed in 30.31 to finish in 1:56.97, just ahead of Michigan sophomore Katelyn Crom (1:57.04) and Michigan freshman Hannah Bellard (1:57.19).
