Big Ten Women’s Championships: Ohio State Completes Fourth Straight Title

The 2023 Big Ten Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships concluded from Canham Natatorium in Ann Arbor, Mich., with the Day 5 finals.

Ohio State entered the day with the lead and continued to build toward another title, making it four in a row.

The Saturday events were the 1650 freestyle, 200 backstroke, 100 free, 200 breast, 200 butterfly, platform diving and the 400 free relay.

Big Ten Women’s 1650 Free

Wisconsin sophomore Paige McKenna, the defending NCAA champion in the 1650 free, broke the pool record and cruised to the Big Ten title in the event to kick off the finals.

McKenna was steadily in the 28s for most of the race and finished in 15:46.90, 10 seconds ahead of the field. It was an NCAA “A” cut.

Indiana sophomore Ching Gan was second in 15:56.55, followed by teammate Mariah Denigan (15:57.82).

Ohio State took the next two spots with Maya Geringer (16:05.34) and Gwen Woodbury (16:05.80).

Big Ten Women’s 200 Backstroke

Indiana sophomore Anna Peplowski claimed the conference title in the 200 backstroke. She was the only swimmer to break 1:52, getting to the wall in 1:51.81, an NCAA “B” cut.

Ohio State got three of the next three spots with Felicia Pasadyn second (1:52.90), Morgan Kraus fourth (1:54.53) and Tristan Harrison fifth (1:54.84).

Wisconsin sophomore Mackenzie McConagha was third (1:53.77).

Big Ten Women’s 100 Frestyle

Ohio State senior Amy Fulmer broke the pool record to win the conference title in the 100 free. Fulmer touched the wall in 47.02, breaking her own mark set during prelims. It is an NCAA “A” cut.

The Buckeyes again stuffed the final, going 1-3-4 with Katherine Zenick (47.92) and Teresa Ivan (48.30) going 3-4 behind Michigan’s Lindsay Flynn (47.50).

Big Ten Women’s 200 Breaststroke

Indiana postgrad Noelle Peplowski gave her family and school another title by winning the 200 breast.

After her sister won the 200 back, Noelle got to the wall in 2:06.01, an NCAA “A” cut to hold off the field by a second and a half.

Ohio State senior Josie Pantiz was second in 2:07.57, followed by Indiana’s Mackenzie Looze (2:08.58).

Michigan freshman Katie Crom broke the pool record and surged to the conference title in the 200 butterfly.

She dropped a second and a half from her prelims time and got to the wall in 1:53.94, an NCAA “B” cut.

Ohio State’s Felicia Pasadyn was second in 1:54.33, followed by Minnesota junior Megan Van Berkom (1:55.14) and Northwestern senior Miriam Guevara (1:55.82).

Big Ten Women’s 400 Free Relay

Ohio State put the exclamation point on the meet title with a pool record and “A” cut in the 400 free relay.

Katherine Zenick, Catherine Russo, Teresa Ivan and Amy Fulmer claimed the title in 3:10.12, breaking the previous pool record of 3:13.81 set by Michigan in 2016.

Michigan’s Lindsay Flynn, Christey Liang, Brady Kendall and Megan Glass took second in an A cut 3:13.19, also under the previous pool record.
