Big Ten Weekly Honors: Max McHugh, Phoebe Bacon Lead Honorees

The Big Ten Conference selected its weekly swimming and diving honors.

Big Ten Men’s Swimmer of the Week

Max McHugh, Minnesota

Jr. – Sturgeon Bay, Wis. – Sevastopol

  • Swept the breaststroke events against Purdue and Wisconsin last weekend
  • Clocked an NCAA ‘A’ cut time in the 100-yard breaststroke (50.63), the fastest time in the NCAA this season
  • Posted a NCAA ‘B’ cut time in the 200-yard breaststroke (1:53.78), finishing five seconds faster than his nearest challenger
  • Garners his fourth career Swimmer of the Week award and first of the season
  • Last Minnesota Swimmer of the Week: Max McHugh (Dec. 11, 2019)

 

Big Ten Men’s Diver of the Week

Andrew Capobianco, Indiana

Jr. – Holly Springs, N.C. – Holly Springs

  • Recorded a pair of first-place finishes with season-best NCAA Zone qualifying scores against Ohio State last weekend
  • Finished first on the 1-meter board with an NCAA qualifying score of 417.00
  • Placed first and posted an NCAA qualifying standard on the 3-meter board (473.55)
  • Earns his fourth career Diver of the Week award and second of the season
  • Last Indiana Diver of the Week: Andrew Capobianco (Jan. 20, 2021)

 

Big Ten Men’s Freshman of the Week 
Andrew Benson, Wisconsin

Newmarket, N.H. – Phillips Exeter Academy

  • Earned two individual first-place finishes in his first meet as a Badger against Minnesota and Purdue last weekend
  • Set the top time in the Big Ten in the 200-yard individual medley (1:46.64), also notching a NCAA ‘B’ cut
  • Finished first with an NCAA ‘B’ cut time in the 100-yard freestyle (43.43)
  • Earns his first Freshman of the Week award
  • Last Wisconsin Freshman of the Week: Matt Novinski (Nov. 8, 2017)

 

Big Ten Women’s Swimmer and Freshman of the Week

Phoebe Bacon, Wisconsin

Fr. – Bethesda, Md. – Stone Ridge School of the Sacred Heart

  • Collected three first-place finishes against Minnesota and Purdue last weekend in her first meet as a Badger
  • Recorded NCAA ‘B’ cut times in the 100-yard backstroke (52.27) and 200-yard backstroke (1:53.87)
  • Touched first in the 200-yard individual medley (1:57.80) to tally another NCAA ‘B’ cut time
  • Garners her first career Swimmer and Freshman of the Week award
  • Last Wisconsin Swimmer of the Week: Beata Nelson (Jan. 28, 2020)
  • Last Wisconsin Freshman of the Week: Beata Nelson (Feb. 8, 2017)

Women’s Diver of the Week

Anne Fowler, Indiana

Fr. – Burke, Va. – Homeschooled

  • Won two diving events against Ohio State last weekend
  • Finished first on the 1-meter board with an NCAA qualifying mark of 356.18, breaking Indiana’s dual meet record and the third-highest overall score in program history
  • Earned an NCAA qualifying 3-meter score of 372.75 for a first-place result and the ï¬ fth-best mark in team history
  • Earns her first Diver of the Week award
  • Last Indiana Diver of the Week: Jessica Parratto (Jan. 30, 2019)
