Big Ten Day 4 Finals: Final Event Enables Indiana to Edge Ohio State by Half Point For Title

The 2024 Big Ten Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships continued on Saturday from Purdue University in West Lafayette, Ind., with the Day 4 finals – which proved to be incredibly memorable.

Ohio State began the day in the lead but Indiana took over for a couple of events, before the Buckeyes retook it. OSU led by 1.5 points heading into the final relay.

Indiana touched out OSU on the final relay to steal the title by a half point – yes a half point.

The Day 4 events were the 1650 freestyle, 200 backstroke, 100 freestyle, 200 breaststroke, 200 butterfly and 400 free relay.

Big Ten Women’s 1650 Freestyle

Indiana junior Ching Hwee Gan put the Hoosiers in front with a win in the mile. She got to the wall in 15:54.83.

Meanwhile teammate Mariah Denigan finished third in 15:59.66.

Wisconsin freshman Madeline Waggoner took second in 15:57.36 and teammate Paige McKenna was fourth in 15:59.84.

Big Ten Women’s 200 Backstroke

Wisconsin senior Phoebe Bacon crushed the field to win the 200 backstroke. She finished in 1:50:05, an NCAA A cut to win by more than two seconds.

Northwestern grad student Ayla Spitz finished second in 1:57.37.

Ohio State’s Krista Marlin finished third in 1:54.31, ahead of Indiana’s Mya Dewitt (1:54.62) and Anna Freed (1:54.80).

Ohio State grad student Morgan Kraus finished sixth in 1:55.65.

Big Ten Women’s 100 Freestyle

Ohio State grad student Amy Fulmer gave the Buckeyes their first win of the night in the 100 free, going a 47.48.

But Indiana remained slightly ahead with a 2-3-8 finish in the event. Anna Peplowski finished second (47.53), Kristin Paegle was third (47.65) and Ashley Turak was eighth (49.09).

Ohio State senior Katherine Zenick finished fifth (47.92) and Teresa Ivan was seventh (48.35).

Big Ten Women’s 200 Breaststroke

Indiana’s Brearna Crawford won the 200 breaststroke, but Ohio State picked up enough points to move back into the lead after the event.

Crawford finished in 2:07.25, ahead of Ohio State’s Josephine Panitz (2:08.59), Wisconsin’s Hazal Ozkan (2:09.16) and Ohio State’s Reese Dehen (2:01.80).

The Buckeyes moved back into the lead with 1,178.5 points and Indiana was at 1,163 and Michigan 1,029 following the event.

Big Ten Women’s 200 Butterfly

Michigan sophomore Katelyn Crom surged to the title in the 200 butterfly, finishing in 1:54.61.

Minnesota senior Megan Van Berkom was second in 1:55.63, followed by Michigan freshman Hannah Bellard (1:55.72).

Ohio State and Indiana each had two in the finals.

OSU’s Kyra Sommerstad took fourth in 1:56.39, followed by Indiana’s Anna Freed (1:57.76) and Katherine Forrester (1:57.97), followed by OSU’s Jessica Eden (1:58.48).

Ohio State moved to 1,241.5 points, while Indiana was at 1,232 and Michigan 1,110 after the event.

Big Ten Women’s Platform Diving

Indiana junior Skyler Liu won the platform event with 342.40 points, just 0.3 points ahead of Minnesota sophomore Vivi Del Angel.

Indiana scored three divers in the event and pulled within 1.5 points of Ohio State with one relay to go and the Big Ten title on the line.

The Buckeyes have 1,304.5 points and Indiana sits at 1,303.

Big Ten Women’s 400 Free Relay

Michigan claimed the top spot in the relay, but Indiana finished second to ultimately win the meet.

Michigan’s Stephanie Balduccini, Claire Newman, Brady Kendall and Lindsay Flynn won in 3:11.21, a pool record and NCAA A cut.

Indiana’s Anna Peplowski, Ashley Turak, Ella Ristic and Kristina Paegle took second in 3:11.37.

The Hoosiers were one spot ahead of Ohio State which determined the meet by a half point.

Ohio State’s Katherine Zenick, Teresa Ivan, Amy Fulmer and Tristan Harrison finished third in 3:21.70.
