Big Ten Conference Weekly Honors: Indiana’s Bruno Blaskovic Leads Awards

Indiana University junior Bruno Blaskovic was named Big Ten Conference Swimmer of the Week, the league office announced on Wednesday afternoon.

The honor is the first of the season for Blaskovic and the fifth collected by a Hoosier this season. Senior Mohamed Samy (Big Ten Swimmer of the Week) and freshman Brendan Burns (Big Ten Freshman of the Week) each collected conference laurels on Nov. 27, 2019. Junior Mory Gould (Big Ten Diver of the Week) and sophomore Noelle Peplowski (Big Ten Co-Swimmer of the Week) each earned league honors on Jan. 15.

Blaskovic compiled three event victories in Indiana’s 171-129 team win over No. 10 Louisville. He won both the 50 free (19.95) and the 100 free (43.52). He also served as the leadoff leg of the winning 400 freestyle relay. He split a time of 43.76 to open the race.

All three of his times resulted in NCAA B Cut marks. His two individual event titles and three combined wins marked a season high for the Vodnjan, Croatia, native.

• Swept the one-meter (344.80) and three-meter (406.55) boards in a triangular meet with Minnesota and Northwestern last weekend

• Recorded NCAA Zone qualifying marks in both events

• Has won 10 of 12 events this season, including four sweeps of the one and three-meter boards

• Garners his fifth Diver of the Week award this season

• Last Purdue Diver of the Week: Greg Duncan (Nov. 27, 2019)

 

Big Ten Conference Freshman of the Week

Federico Burdisso, Northwestern

Fr. – Pavia, Italy – Mount Kelly – Major: Undeclared

• Won six individual titles and contributed to two relay crowns in Northwestern’s triangular meet victories over Minnesota and Purdue last weekend

• Won the 50 free (:20.05), 100 free (:44.10) and 100 fly (:47.71) and was a member of the winning 800 free relay unit (6:34.87) in the wins over the Golden Gophers and Boilermakers

• Instrumental in helping the Wildcats beat Minnesota in a dual meet for the first time in program history and earn their first dual meet win over Purdue since 2006-07

• Collects his fourth consecutive and career Freshman of the Week accolade

  • Posted two first-place finishes to help Minnesota earn a triangular meet wins against Northwestern and Purdue
  • Recorded first-place finishes and NCAA B-cut times in the 100 free (1:00.50) and 200 breast (2:12.87), while also placing second in the 50 free and as a member of the 200 free relay
  • Garners her third career Swimmer of the Week award and second this season

Diver of the Week
Emily Bretscher, Purdue

  • Recorded three NCAA Zone qualifying scores in a triangular meet against Minnesota and Northwestern last weekend
  • Finished first in the 1-meter (301.60) and second in the 3-meter (324.60) and platform (266.45)
  • Delivered a season-high score on the platform
  • Earns her sixth career Diver of the Week award and fourth this season

Freshman of the Week
