Bethany Carson Lowers Irish Record Even Further

DUBLIN, Ireland, March 3. A day after two records fell during the Irish Olympic Trials, Bethany Carson dropped one of the records even further.
Carson followed up her national record in the women's 100 fly prelims by dropping it even lower in the finale. She raced to a 1:00.53 to win the title, clipping her 1:00.56 from earlier in the meet. That swim had erased one of Michelle Smith's national records that she set in 1996, according to Swim Ireland.
Smith remains the national record holder in four other events (200 free, 400 free, 200 fly and 400 IM), after a controversial career that included being banned for four years after a urine sample tested positive for alcohol, which was considered to be tampering with a sample.
