Ben Hines, Robbie Hill Set State Records as Glendale Wins Missouri Boys Class 1 Championships

The 2019 Missouri Boys Class 1 State Swimming & Diving Championships took place on Nov. 15 at the St. Peters Rec-Plex in St. Peters, Mo.

Glendale used impressive depth to end Central Cape Girardeau’s three-year reign by earning the championship title with 247 points. A total of 5 records were broken:

The meet began as Central Cape Girardeau’s Jacob Bening (23.19), Seabaugh (25.14), Josh Glenn (24.69), and Atticus Vines (23.32) teamed up to win the opening 4×50 medley relay in 1:36.34, just ahead of runner-up Chaminade (1:36.59). Seabaugh (46.88), Truman Vines (48.46), Jack Maxton (48.74), and Bening (45.70) also won the 4×100 free relay in 3:09.78.

Seabaugh was then quickly back in the water to defend his 200 free title, stopping the clock in 1:40.51 – just shy of his own Class 1 record he set last year. The future Mizzou Tiger later went on to dominate the 500 free, winning by seven seconds in 4:28.94 which was fast enough for a new Class 1 record.

After taking second in the event a year ago, Hill raced to first in the 200 IM while dropping five seconds from his prelims to touch in 1:48.62 for a new Class 1 record. Hill, who sent his verbal to Missouri State, then powered home to a win in the 100 back, touching the wall in a quick 48.98 to set a new Missouri state record.

AJ Huskey of Battle, who will join Hill in Columbia next fall, flew to first place in the 100 fly for the second-consecutive year, getting his hands to the wall in 49.87 as the only swimmer to crack the 50-second barrier. After finishing second last year, Parkway South’s Brayden Escher dove to first on the 1-meter board with a final score of 464.45, just ahead of Park Hill South’s Greyson Langer who posted 463.55 points for second.

Hines sprinted his way to the top of the podium for the second-straight year in the 50 free, throwing down a blistering 20.07 to win the event by well over a second en route to setting a new Missouri state record. The junior then proved his sprint by defending his 100 free title in 45.28, fast enough for a new Class 1 mark.

Cole, who earned bronze in the event in 2018, earned gold this year in the 100 breast as the first of only three swimmers in the field to break the minute-marker, doing so in a winning time of 56.69. His time of 56.49 during prelims set a new Class 1 mark. Glendale’s Andrew McIllwain (22.30), Collin McNew (22.65), Jack Beatty (21.54), and Michael Jasinski (20.91) combined to win the 4×50 free relay in 1:27.50, over a second ahead of runner-up Chaminade (1:28.56).
