The 2020 Big Ten Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships kicked off with two relays from the University of Iowa Aquatic Center on Wednesday.

Michigan won the first relay, breaking the pool record in the event, as the Wolverines aim to take back the Big Ten title after Indiana snapped the three-year winning streak by the Wolverines last year.

Maggie MacNeil started strong with a record relay leadoff to spark the victory.

After the first night, Michigan leads with 118 points, followed by Ohio State (112), Wisconsin (108), Northwestern (102) and Minnesota (98).

Big Ten Women’s Championship: 200 Medley Relay

Michigan’s Maggie MacNeil led off the 200 medley relay with a backstroke split of 23.05 — the fastest 50 back split in history — to get the Wolverines an early lead.

The previous best short-course yards 50 back split was 23.36 set by Cal’s Rachel Bootsma.

The rest of the swimmers held as Miranda Tucker split a 26.20 in the breaststroke, Claire Maiocco split a 23.64 in the butterfly and Daria Pyshnenko anchored a 21.32 to give the Wolverines the victory in 1:34.21, also breaking the school record.

The time broke the pool record of 1:37.34 set by Wisconsin in 2012 and was close to the 2018 Indiana Big Ten meet record of 1:34.16.

Ohio State’s Rebekah Bradley, Hannah Bach, Katherin Trace and Freya Rayner finished second in 1:35.17, while Northwestern’s Calypso Sheridan, Sophie Angus, Miriam Guevara and Madeline Smith finished third in 1:36.37.
