2019 Big Ten Women’s Championships Day 2 Prelims: Nelson Breaks Big Ten Mark

The first prelims session of the 2019 Big Ten Women’s Championship featured heats of the 500 free, 200 IM and 50 free.

Michigan continued its strong distance performance, while Beata Nelson of Wisconsin broke a Big Ten record in the 200 IM.

500 Free

Ohio State junior Molly Kowal took the top seed in the 500 free, while Michigan landed three in the finals in the event. Kowal finished the race in 4:40.02.

Michigan senior Yirong (Rose) Bi took the second seed in 4:40.23. Sierra Schmidt was sixth (4:40.74) for the Wolverines and Becca Postoll was eighth (4:42.27).

Indiana’s Cassandra Jernberg was third in 4:40.25. Minnesota’s Chantal Nack took fourth in 4:40.54 ahead of teammate Mackenzie Padington (4:40.66).

Penn State’s Ally McHugh took the seventh seed in 4:40.95.

200 IM

Wisconsin’s Beata Nelson broke the Big Ten meet record in the 200 IM, taking the top seed in 1:53.27.

Her time broke the record set last year by Michigan’s Siobhan Haughey (1:53.59). Haughey took the third seed on Thursday in 1:55.49 behind Nelson and Indiana’s Bailey Andison (1:55.40).

Indiana freshman Mackenzie Looze took the fourth seed in 1:56.01, followed by Wisconsin freshman Lillie Hosack in 1:56.13.

Northwestern’s Calypso Sheridan took the sixth seed in 1:56.18, followed by Indiana’s Lilly King 1:57.02 and Ohio State’s Kathrin Demler (1:57.49)

Michigan took three of the top four seeds in the 50 freestyle, including going 1-2 on Thursday morning.

Freshman Maggie MacNeil took the top seed in 21.75, breaking the pool record set by NC State’s Ky-Lee Perry last year (21.80).

Just behind MacNeil was senior teammate Catie DeLoof, who finished in 22.97.

Michigan sophomore Daria Pyshnenko took the fourth seed (22.34) behind Ohio State’s Freya Rayner (22.18).

Ohio State’s Taylor Petrak was fifth 922.37), followed by Wisconsin’s Emmy Sehmann (22.48), Iowa’s Hannah Burvill (22.62) and Minnesota’s Zoe Avestruz (22.65).
