2019 Big Ten Men’s Championships Day 3 Prelims: Finnerty Sets Big Ten Record

The 2019 Big Ten Men’s Championship meet continued from Iowa on Friday.

Day 3 prelims consists of the 100 fly, 400 IM, 200 Free, 100 Breast and 100 Back.

Indiana has surged into the team lead and will look to hold off Michigan and the rest of the field.

100 Fly

Indiana sophomore Bruno Blaskovic took the top seed in the 100 fly to kick off the session as the Hoosiers placed four in the finals.

Michigan junior Miles Smachlo took the second seed in 45.54, holding off Ohio State’s Noah Lense (45.63) and Michael Salazar (45.73).

Indiana sophomore Gabriel Fantoni took the fifth spot (45.75) ahead of teammate Vini Lanza (45.79).

Ohio State’s Henrique Painhas took the seventh seed (45.85), while Indiana freshman Van Mathias was eighth (45.91).

Michigan sophomore Ricardo Vargas took the top seed in the 400 IM as the Wolverines returned serve to the Hoosiers by placing four in the finals.

Penn State’s Michael Daly took the second seed (3:43.60) ahead of Michigan’s Thomas Cope (3:43.89) and Charles Swanson (3:44.34).

Wisconsin’s Michael Milinovich took the fifth spot (3:45.25) ahead of Michigan’s William Roberts (3:46.50).

Indiana’s Michael Calvillo (3:47.02) took the seventh spot and Penn State sophomore Hayden Harlow was eighth (3:47.23).

Indiana senior Zach Apple clocked a 1:33.21 to take the top seed in the 200 free.

Apple held off Ohio State sophomore Paul DeLakis, who took the second seed in 1:33.62 ahead of teammate Andrew Loy (1:33.83).

Indiana’s Mohamed Samy took the fourth seed in 1:33.90 ahead of Michigan junior Felix Aubock (1:34.06) and teammate Mokhtar Al-Yamani (1:34.17).

Ohio State’s Ruslan Gaziev was seventh (13;4.84) and Michigan freshman Kevin Callan was eighth (1:34.96).

100 Breast

There was no surprise that Indiana’s Ian Finnerty surged to the top seed in the 100 breast. After all, the senior is the defending NCAA champion.

But Finnerty still wowed the crowd, swimming a Big Ten meet record 50.60 to earn the top seed.

Minnesota freshman Max McHugh took the seconds seed in 51.39, followed by Purdue sophomore Trent Pellini (51.85).

Michigan junior Jeremy Babinet took the fourth spot in 52.02, followed by Indiana freshman Zane Backes (52.42), Michigan freshman William Chan (52.46), Indiana sophomore Gary Kostbade (52.55) and Michigan junior Jacob Montague (52.65).

Indiana put a strong finish on the prelims session by putting three in the 100 back finals, including taking the top two seeds.

Sophomore Gabriel Fantoni took the top seed for the Hoosiers in 45.46, followed by teammate Jacob Steele (46.24).

Ohio State senior Henrique Painhas took the third seed (46.43), followed by Purdue senior Joseph Young (46.50).

Indiana’s Mohamed Samy took the fifth seed in 46.57, followed by Wisconsin junior Cameron Tysoe (46.81), Michigan sophomore Alex King (46.83) and Ohio State sophomore Colin McDermott (47.00).
