2018 TYR Pro Swim Series: World Leading Times Posted During Day Two Finals

The second evening of swimming for the 2018 TYR Pro Swim Series in Atlanta was fueled by swift times as national and international stars alike clocked world leading times.
Ryan Murphy and Jacob Pebley continued to dominate the men’s 200 back with world leading times, while Canadian teenager Taylor Ruck posted the fastest time in the women’s 200 back by more than a second. Additionally, Chase Kalisz threw down a sizzling 4:08.92 to set a new pool record and better his world leading time in the men’s 400 IM.

Women’s 400 IM
Madisyn Cox, representing Longhorn Aquatics, accelerated from her second place seed in finals of the 400 IM to claim the title with a time of 4:37.94. Cox trailed behind ABSC’s Hali Flickinger and Saint Petersburg’s Melanie Margalis after the fly leg of the race, but a strong backstroke leg pushed Cox into a strong lead, which she never backed down from.
Margalis finished second overall with a time of 4:38.13, while Flickinger took home the bronze with a time of 4:39.98.
Picking up fourth was Northern Kentucky Clippers’ Mariah Denigan with a time of 4:45.41, followed by UBC Thunderbirds’ Megan Dalke’s 4:47.51.
Sarasota YMCA’s Emma Weyant (4:48.44), Trojan Swim Club’s Haley Anderson (4:49.96), and Magnolia Aquatics’ Kaitlynn Sims’ (4:53.97) were sixth through eighth overall.

Men’s 400 IM
Chase Kalisz was in a race of his own throughout the final of the men’s 400 IM. Kalisz jumped out to an early lead in the first half of the race and continued to simply build upon that lead throughout the remainder of the race. The 2017 world champion solidified himself as the current fastest in the world with a sizzling 4:08.92, downing his own pool record of 4:09.43 (2017) in the process.
Fellow Olympian Josh Prenot, representing Cal Aquatics, also swam a race of his own for part of the race, stopping the clock at a final time of 4:18.58. Prenot’s time sits himself around fifth in the world rankings for 2018.
Plymouth’s Andrew Abruzzo grabbed third overall with a time of 4:22.19, followed by SwimAtlanta’s Andrew Winton and his time of 4:24.37.
Colin Eriks of UBC Thunderbirds took fifth in the event with a 4:25.30, while 16-year-old Ian Grum of Dynamo Swim Club was sixth with a 4:26.77.
Argentina’s Santiago Bergli and Dynamo Swim Club’s Raunak Khosla took seventh and eighth with times of 4:27.82 and 4:28.40.

Women’s 50 Free
Margo Geer continued to capitalize on her 2018 comeback with a top showing in the 50 free final in Atlanta. Geer posted the only sub-25 second swim of the night with a time of 24.78, improving upon her 24.83 from the TYR Pro Swim Series stop in Austin. Her time of 24.78 edges her closer to Australia’s Bronte Campbell’s fourth place world ranking of 24.71.
Olivia Smoliga picked up a second place finish in finals with a time of 25.14, followed closely by Cal Aquatics’ Farida Osman and her time of 25.29.
Sprinting stalwart Lia Neal added a fourth place finish with a time of 25.33, while Mission Viejo’s Isabella Arcila took fifth with a time of 25.41.
HPC-Ontario’s Kayla Sanchez (25.43), Trojan Swim Club’s Anika Apostalon (25.47), and Mission Viejo’s Amanda Kendall (25.67) finished sixth through eighth respectively.

18-year old Michael Andrew had all jets firing during finals of the men’s 50 free, splashing past sprinting stalwart Nathan Adrian to claim the gold. Andrew posted a 21.93 for gold; a time that doubles as the second fastest time in the world for 2018, behind Great Britain’s Benjamin Proud and his time of 21.52.
Adrian finished second overall with a time of 22.09, a shy .01 seconds off his time of 22.08 from the Austin stop of the TYR Pro Swim Series.
Vladimir Morozov, representing Trojan Swim Club, claimed a close third with a time of 22.11, while Andrii Govorov took fourth with a 22.34.
Brazil’s Bruno Fratus took fifth in finals with a time of 22.51, followed by Marcelo Chierighini’s time of 22.69.
Argentina’s Guido Buscaglia and Club Aquatique’s Mehdi Ayoubi were seventh and eighth with times of 22.82 and 23.14 respectively.

Women’s 200 Back
One night after upsetting world-record holder Sarah Sjostrom, Canada’s Taylor Ruck blasted a world best time in finals of the women’s 200 back. The 17-year-old jumped to an early lead in the race and never let go, powering to a dominating time of 2:06.36. Her time blasts past the world leading time of 2:07.47, set by fellow Canadian Kylie Masse at the Uster International meet.
Italy’s Federica Pellegrini held off HP Center Victoria’s Jade Hannah and collected a silver medal with a time of 2:11.28. Hannah settled for third and a time of 2:11.49.
Sinclair Larson, representing SwimMAC Carolina, grabbed fourth overall with a time of 2:12.60, while Argentina’s Andrea Berrino took fifth with a time of 2:16.39.
Mariah Denigan of the Northern Kentucky Clippers returned from the 400 IM to finish sixth with a 2:16.50, followed by Pointe-Claire’s Aela Janvier’s 2:17.66.
Erica Sullivan of the Sandpipers of Nevada completed the top eight with a time of 2:18.73.

Men’s 200 Back
A trio of talented backstrokers led the field in the men’s 200 back throughout the entirety of the race. Cal teammates Ryan Murphy and Jacob Pebley, along with Japan’s Ryosuke Irie, kept close with one another throughout the first 150 meters of the race, but Murphy pulled away to claim the win and defend his title from Austin with a time of 1:55.46. That time improves upon Murphy’s world leading time of 1:56.11 from the Austin stop.
Pebley finished close behind Murphy with a time of 1:55.85, also improving upon his second place ranking of 1:56.40 in the 2018 world rankings.
Irie, who returned tonight as the top qualifier, took third overall with a 1:56.77. His time improves upon his previous 2018 best of 1:57.40 from the Geneva International meet and moved him to fourth overall in the world rankings.
Josiah Binnema of the UBC Thunderbirds grabbed fourth overall with a 2:00.59, followed by teammate Markus Thormeyer’s time of 2:00.65.
SwimAtlanta’s Bradley Dunham (2:02.51), Dynamo Swim Club’s Ian Grum (2:02.78), and Plymouth’s Andrew Abruzzo (2:03.45) took sixth through eighth respectively.

Just ten minutes after posting the world’s fastest time in the women’s 200 back, Canada’s Taylor Ruck was in total control of the race in the 200 free. The 17-year-old was one of five teenagers in the ‘A’ final field and demonstrated her ability to quickly recover from a tough double. Ruck jumped to a quick lead in the race and only grew stronger, posting a final time of 1:56.85. Her time moves her to fourth in the world rankings for 2018.
China’s Jianjiahe Wang continued the teenage domination with a second place showing of 1:57.60, earning herself a spot in the top ten world rankings for 2018.
Fellow Canadians Rebecca Smith, Penny Oleksiak, and Kayla Sanchez collected third through fifth place finishes with times of 1:59.1, 1:59.32, and 2:00.29 respectively.
Santa Clara’s Nicole Olivia and Lia Neal, swimming unattached, rounded out the top eight with times of 2:02.28 and 2:02.96.

Jack Conger built upon his night one victory in the 100 fly with a top showing in the men’s 200 free. The Texas grad jumped to an early lead and held off a fast-charging field to win with a time of 1:46.96. Conger’s time moves him to third overall in the 2018 world rankings behind Lithuanian Danas Rapsys (1:45.35) and Australians Kyle Chalmers (1:46.49), Alexander Graham (1:46.72), and Mack Horton (1:46.76).
Egyptian Marwan Elkamash held off Mission Viejo’s Zane Grothe for second place with a time of 1:48.16, while Grothe settled for third and a 1:48.46.
Baylor Swim Club’s Trey Freeman took fourth in Atlanta with a time of 1:49.41, followed by Dimitrios Dimitrou and his time of 1:50.21.
HP Center Victoria’s Jeremy Bagshaw (1:50.66), Plymouth’s Andrew Abruzzo (1:50.68), and Longhorn Aquatics’ Clark Smith (1:52.58) were sixth through eighth.
