Viktoria Zeynep Gunes Leads 100 Breast After Prelims at 2015 FINA World Junior Championships
Turkey’s Viktoria Zeynep Gunes turned in a sizzling 1:06.96 to lead the competition in prelims of the women’s 100-meter breaststroke. Gunes succeeded in shaving .64 seconds off of her seed time of 1:07.60 and finished strikingly close to Ruta Meilutyte’s 2013 championship meet record of 1:06.61.
Japan’s Runa Imai finished second overall in prelims with a time of 1:08.35. Imai added slightly to her time of 1:07.46 so look for her to turn up the heat come semi-finals tonight.
Great Britain’s Katie Matts grabbed the third place seed with a finishing time of 1:08.66, adding just slightly to her seed time of 1:08.53.
Mariia Astashkina of Russia finished fourth in prelims with a time of 1:08.89. Astashkina was followed closely to the wall by Italy’s Giulia Verona, also of heat 3, after Verona posted a time of 1:08.96.
Sweden’s Sophie Hansson and Japan’s Yukino Miyasaka turned in strikingly close times with Hansson finishing only .02 seconds ahead of Miyasaka in the results. Hansson will return to semi-finals as the sixth place seed with a time of 1:09.44, while Miyasaka will take seventh after a time of 1:09.46.
Kennedy Lohman of the USA will round out the top eight qualifiers after posting a finishing time of 1:09.60.
Russia’s Daria Chikunova (1:09.90), Kenya’s Kamau Rebecca Wacui (1:10.29), Australia’s Ella Bond (1:10.39), Canada’s Sarah Darcel (1:10.66), USA’s Nikol Popov (1:10.78), Australia’s Calypso Sheridan (1:11.43), Slovakia’s Andrea Podmanikova (1:11.48), and Belgium’s Lise Michels (1:11.53) will also return for tonight’s semi-finals.
