MANCHESTER, England, April 10. A Ukrainian walked away with the men's 100 breast world title again this year, but it wasn't defending champ Oleg Lisogor. Igor Borysik garnered the title to give Ukraine three out of the last four titles at the FINA World Short Course Championships.
Borysik hit the wall in 57.74 to win, just off Lisogor's national record time of 57.67 from 2006. He also broke Lisogor's meet record of 58.14 from 2006.
"I wasn't hoping to win this medal but deep inside myself I was waiting for this," Borysik told meet organizers. "Tomorrow I will swim the 200m breaststroke. I am looking for another medal."
South Africa's Cameron van der Burgh smashed his national record of 58.70 from the Berlin World Cup stop with a second-place time of 57.92. Lisogor, meanwhile, medaled for the third time in four tries after winning gold in 2002 and 2006. Lisogor stopped the clock for bronze in 58.08.
Norway's Alexander Dale Oen and Mark Gangloff of the United States tied for fourth with matching 58.14s. Dale Oen lowered his national record of 58.60 from last December.
Robin van Aggele of the Netherlands clipped his national record with a sixth-place 58.70 to surpass his 58.73 from prelims.
