World Short Course Championships: Britain’s Mark Foster Falls .01 Short of Meet Record, Qualifies First in 50 Free Semis

MANCHESTER, England, April 10. THE FINA World Short Course Championship 50 freestyle semifinal featured the 37-year-old Mark Foster of Great Britain as the top finisher.
Foster, who holds the national record in the event and is a four-time World Champion in the short course 50 freestyle at this meet, put up the top time of 21.32, falling just short of the United States' Cullen Jones' 2006 meet record of 21.31.
Jose Meolans of Argentina placed second (21.43) while Ryan Lochte of the United States finished .03 second behind in third (21.46).
Bryan Lundquist followed his fellow countryman, Lochte, placing fourth with a time of 21.55. The United States was the only country in the event to send two men back to the championship heat.
Grant Brits of Australia and Jernej Godec of Slovakia placed fourth and fifth with respective times of 21.57 and 21.58.
Duje Draganja of Croatia (21.63) and Gerhard Zandberg of South Africa (21.72) rounded out the eight men who qualified for tomorrow evening's championship showdown.
Nabil Kebbab of Algeria and George Bovell of Trinidad and Tobago battled it out in a swim-off for the first alternate spot. Kebbab edged out Bovell by a margin of 21.89-21.92.
