World Cup Stop Scheduled for Brazil Canceled
RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil, September 29. ACCORDING to an Associated Press report, the FINA World Cup stop scheduled for mid-October in Brazil has been canceled. Brazil has also backed out of future World Cup dates at this point in time.
"There are no financial resources. They cannot find any funding. They say they cannot do it," FINA executive director Cornel Marculescu told the Associated Press. "I only know about my own sport, and there will be no World Cup in Rio for the next four years. The Olympic Games is a different budget. Rio's proposals for aquatics venues are very good. Belo Horizonte is difficult to get to. You have to change planes in Rio or Sao Paulo."
Without the Brazil stop, there will only be five World Cup meets this year with stops in South Africa, Russia, Sweden, Germany and Singapore.
