NEW COMMIT: The Badgers have picked up their third early verbal commitment for the class of 2025, this time from in-state native Abby Carlson of Waukesha, Wis. She will join Nation’s Capital teammates Mackenzie McConagha and Paige McKenna in the fall of 2021.

Carlson, who owns three Summer Juniors standards, does her club swimming with Waukesha Express Swim Team and most recently raced three events at NCSAs this past summer after winning the 200m/400m/800m freestyles at Wisconsin LCM States. Last winter, she earned three more gold medals at Wisconsin SCY States before going on to final in the 200 free at NCSAs.

A current junior at Waukesha South/Mukwonago Co-Op High School, Carlson is already a four-time Wisconsin DI State Championship finalist. She was the 500 free runner-up and took fifth in the 200 IM as a sophomore after placing fifth and 12th, respectively, in those events during her freshman season. She has also earned USA Swimming Scholastic All-American honors for her efforts.

Her best times include:

  • 50 free – 24.12/27.21
  • 100 free – 51.91/57.50
  • 200 free – 1:49.93/2:02.98
  • 500 free – 4:57.61/4:22.88

When she arrives in Madison at the start of the 2021-22 season, Carlson will add her talents to a training group that’ll include Alana PalmerMara Newman, and Madison Waechter. It took a 23.10/50.57/1:48.56/4:49.02 to score in the 50/100/200/500 freestyles at the 2019 Big Ten Championships where Wisconsin finished fifth overall in the team standings, but Carlson has consistently made improvements each season with just under two years of club swimming still to go.
