What Was the Best Female Performance of the World Championships? (VOTE HERE!)
Picking the best male performance of the World Championships in Singapore was not difficult. When Leon Marchand clocked 1:52.69 for a world record in the semifinals of the 200-meter individual medley, the performance required a double-take. The Frenchman lopped 1.31 seconds off the previous standard, the 1:54.00 set by Ryan Lochte at the 2011 World Champs in Shanghai.
On the women’s side, however, an argument can be made for a number of performances as the best of the meet. The contenders:
- Katie Ledecky’s victory in the 800 freestyle (8:05.62), where she beat Lani Pallister and Summer McIntosh in a thriller.
- The 2:01.99 of Summer McIntosh in the 200 butterfly, which narrowly missed the 2009 world record of Liu Zige.
- Kate Douglass’ American-record effort in the 200 breaststroke, where she clocked 2:18.50 for the No. 2 time in history.
- The 57.16 showing by Australian ace Kaylee McKeown in the 100 backstroke, which was just .03 off the world record.
- Gretchen Walsh’s swim of 54.73 (No. 2 all-time), following illness, en route to gold in the 100 butterfly.
