The morning after clocking the fastest time in the world to win the men’s 200 fly, Michael Phelps returned to the water to swim a race of half the distance. Phelps ended up qualifying second for the final of the 100 fly, finishing just behind Jack Conger. Conger claimed lane four for tonight’s final with a 51.97, while Phelps qualified second in 52.12.
After the race, Phelps quickly spoke to the media about how he bounced back from last night’s big victory. He explained the emotions that he felt after recording his best time in five years and what he heard from members of the U.S. World Championships team following the swim. He also discussed his expectations for the evening final.
