After posting the top times in the world in the 200 and then 100 fly events on consecutive evenings, Michael Phelps returned to the pool for the preliminary heats of the men’s 200 IM. Swimming in lane four in the final heat of the event, Phelps clocked 1:59.63 to claim the third seed for the evening finals behind Will Licon and NBAC teammate Austin Surhoff.
After the race Phelps briefly chatted about his plan of attack for the prelim swim and whether he would rather be seeded higher in the event. He discussed how his different strokes felt after only swimming butterfly thus far in San Antonio. He also said a couple of words about a potential future return to the 400 IM.
