AUSTIN, Texas, May 1. THE first day of the United States Masters Swimming (USMS) National Championships opened with the 1000 and 1650 yard freestyle events.
Jurgen Schmidt, 85, provided the sole record-setting performance of the day with a time of 28:39.15 in the men's 85-89 1650 freestyle event. He erased the previous USMS record of 30:29.58 set by Jim Eubank back in 2001.
The women's 1650 free saw what might be one of the most inspiring efforts of the meet. Gloria Stupfel, 81, completed the 1650 free in the 80-84 division in a time of 51:31.58. That's an entire practice for some people. Stupfel deserves a lot of credit for even completing the swim.
