USA Swimming Sectionals, Federal Way: Amber McDermott Doubles Up
FEDERAL WAY, Washington, March 13. SALMON Bay's Amber McDermott doubled up on the third day of swimming at the USA Swimming Sectionals held in Federal Way, Wash.
McDermott overtook KING's Andie Taylor, 1:46.68 to 1:47.12, for the women's 200-yard free title to open the evening. Meanwhile, Silver Fin Tyler Messerschmidt touched out North Jeffco's John Dalton, 1:37.84 to 1:37.95, for the men's 200-yard free crown.
McDermott returned in the women's 400-yard IM with a meet-record time of 4:09.33. The effort wiped out the 4:11.18 set by Caitlin Leverenz back in 2007. Sun Devil's CJ Nuess followed with a 3:51.90 in the men's 400-yard IM to break a 17-year-old meet record. Jody Braden held the previous record with a 3:52.11 set back in 1992.
Colorado Stars' Missy Franklin, Alyssa Swanson, Caroline Piehl and Jordan Mattern won the women's 800-yard free relay with a time of 7:20.40. The readout eclipsed the meet record of 7:21.87 set by KING back in 2007.
Bellevue's Ian Fisk, Murray Longbotham, Ethan Hallowell and Keenan Natyzak led a trio of teams under the meet record in the men's 800-yard free relay with a top time of 6:42.61. The clocking smashed the former record of 6:50.03 set by Tualatin Hills in 2007. Tualatin Hills (6:45.94) and Tacoma (6:48.46) also cleared the old record.
