IRVINE, California, August 7. NO one can touch Rebecca Soni in the 200 breaststroke right now – no one. Soni played with the field en route to a winning effort of 2:21.60, just off her top-ranked season best of 2:21.41 from the Mare Nostrum circuit. Soni's closest competitor this year has been Leisel Jones with a 2:23.45 from the Australian Nationals in March.
Incredibly, Tucson Ford's Amanda Beard moved into second place in the event with a 2:26.50, but may reject any invitation to the U.S. roster for the Pan Pacific Championships due to a prior engagement as she explained shortly after the race in the on-deck interview. Beard is just less than a year out from giving birth to her son Blaise in September 2009.
Santa Barbara's Katy Freeman (2:26.67), Trojan's Keri Hehn (2:27.10), Rattler's Andrea Kropp (2:27.63), California's Caitlin Leverenz (2:28.58), Wisconsin's Ashley Wanland (2:28.77) and Auburn's Micah Lawrence (2:29.70) also swam in the finale.
SwimMAC's Justin Mueller garnered the B final win with a time of 2:28.00. She just missed her personal best time of 2:28.00.
