IRVINE, California, August 5. IN an event that wound up being more exciting for the drama surrounding it outside of the pool then what happened inside, California's Nathan Adrian won the men's 50 free in 21.70. Adrian moved to second in the world this year behind Cesar Cielo's 21.55 from the Paris Open.
SwimMAC teammates Cullen Jones and Josh Schneider tied for second with matching times of 21.97. Those times moved Jones and Schneider into fifth in the world.
Only three other swimmers prior to tonight had broken 22 seconds this year – Fred Bousquet (21.71), Fabien Gilot (21.83) and Konrad Czerniak (21.98).
Longhorn's Garrett Weber-Gale (22.21), SwimMAC's Nick Brunelli (22.36), California's William Copeland (22.45), Tucson Ford's Matt Grevers (22.53) and Tucson Ford's Adam Small (22.55) turned in fourth through eighth-place finishes.
