IRVINE, California, August 4. MICHAEL Phelps, after taking the first day off, did just what he needed to do this evening with a double in the 200 free and 200 fly. After nipping Ryan Lochte in the 200 free to begin his night, he won the 200 fly going away.
Phelps, the 14-time Olympic gold medalist, turned in a 1:56.00 for the win. The time was somewhat surprising considering many pundits expected him to challenge Nick D'Arcy's top-ranked time of 1:54.61 from the Australian Nationals in March. Phelps has also been faster this year with a fourth-ranked 1:55.70 from the Paris Open. International competition at the Pan Pacific Championship should provide some extra motivation at the end of the month.
More than a second later, Athens Bulldog Mark Dylla took second in 1:57.08 to move into 19th in the world. FAST's Tyler Clary finished third in 1:57.32, while teammate Bobby Bollier placed fourth in 1:57.37.
Michigan's Dan Madwed (1:57.98), NBAC's Todd Patrick (1:58.13), Club Wolverine's Alex Vanderkaay (1:59.96) and Tucson Ford's A.J. Tipton (2:00.31) touched fifth through eighth.
