Plenty of In-Season Bests Highlight Night Three in Columbus

In what has been a fast meet so far, the third day of the 2018 TYR Pro Swim Series in Columbus, Ohio, did not disappoint.

Leah Smith, Chase Kalisz, Michael Andrew, Siobhan Haughey and Blake Pieroni each picked up their second individual titles of the weekend. Plenty of in-season best times were recorded during finals as athletes are preparing for Nationals later this month.

Women’s 400 IM

After dominating the women’s 400 free last night, Leah Smith added her second win of the weekend in the 400 IM on night three of the 2018 TYR Pro Swim Series in Columbus. Smith got her hand to the wall first in 4:37.64, her fastest in-season time of her career.

Smith’s swim marks the eight-fastest time in the world this year and ranks her second among Americans for the 2017-18 season.

Swimming unattached, Vien Nguyen finished second in 4:38.66 while Longhorn’s Evie Pfeifer took third in 4:41.95.

All McHugh (4:42.39), Kathryn Ackerman (4:46.08), Lilly King (4:46.49), Mariah Denigan (4:46.54) and Lauren Edelman (4:47.66) also competed in the top eight.

Ohio State’s Kristen Romano won the B Final in 4:46.16, fast enough for a new Puerto Rico national record.

Men’s 400 IM

Chase Kalisz led the men’s 400 IM field from start to finish on day three of the 2018 TYR Pro Swim Series in Columbus. He knocked off nearly 10 seconds from his morning swim to win the event in 4:15.16, making this his second title of the weekend.

Kalisz has gone six-for-six in 400 IM titles at all TYR Pro Swim Series stops this season. He currently leads the world rankings in this event with his 4:08.92 set back in March.

Hiromasa Fujimo touched the wall in 4:17.57 for second while third place went to Anton Oerskov in 4:18.10.

Takeharu Fujimo (4:18.89), Charlie Swanson (4:19.38), Casey Storch (4:23.75), Jake Foster (4:24.53) and Will Roberts (4:30.97) rounded out the top eight.

Women’s 50 Free

Margo Geer dropped one-tenth from her morning swim to take the women’s 50 free title on night three of the 2018 TYR Pro Swim Series in Columbus. Her time of 24.82 makes her the second-fastest American in the event this year behind Simone Manuel. 

Kelsia Dahlia also dipped under the 25-second barrier to finish second in 24.99. Mallory Comerford took third in 25.35.

Also competing in the top heat were Siobhan Haughey (25.38), Katherine Douglas (25.51), Catie Deloof (25.54), Casey Fanz (25.60) and Amanda Kendall (25.61).

Men’s 50 Free

After posting a personal best time this morning, Michael Andrew was just off his morning swim of 21.69 in the men’s 50 free on the third day of the 2018 TYR Pro Swim Series in Columbus. Andrew was the only swimmer in the field under the 22-second mark, getting his hand to the wall first in 21.70.

His prelims swim ranks the 19-year-old sixth in the world this season and the fastest for an American.

Justin Ress was just off his personal best to take second in 21.70 followed by Zach Apple in 22.56 for third.

Ryan Held (22.73), Bruno Blaskovic (23.03), Mihalis Deliyia (23.03), Andrew Loy (23.09) and Josh Fleagle (23.17) also swam in the A final.

Women’s 200 Back

Asia Seidt took it out fast and held consistent splits en route to winning the women’s 200 back on the third night of the 2018 TYR Pro Swim Series in Columbus. She stopped the clock in 2:08.91 for the title.

Tonight’s time marks a new personal best for Seidt and currently ranks her fourth among American women for the 2017-18 season.

It was a Wildcat sweep as Ali Galyer took second in 2:09.93 and Bridgette Alexander finished third in 2:11.98.

Erin Earley (2:12.27), Alina Kendzior (2:14.29), Emi Moronuki (2:14.34), Emma Seiberlich (2:14.50) and Kristen Romano (2:16.14) also posted top eight finishes.

Men’s 200 Back

Ryosuke Irie dominated the men’s 200 back on the third night of the 2018 TYR Pro Swim Series in Columbus. The 28-year-old held sub-30 the whole race to grab the title in 1:55.51, well over three seconds ahead of the runner-up.

His time moves him from seventh to fifth in the world rankings this season.

Sixteen-year-old Carson Foster was the only other swimmer to break the two-minute barrier, doing so in 1:59.05 for second. Gregory Tarasevich took third in 2:00.09.

Also competiting in the A-final was Jacob Steele (2:00.33), Kikita Tretyako (2:00.58), Zachary Poti (2:01.43), Rob Zofchak (2:01.63) and Harrison Lierz (2:02.32).

Women’s 200 Free

The women’s 200 free proved to be the closest race on the third day of the 2018 TYR Pro Swim Series in Columbus. Siobhan Haughey got to the wall first in 1:57.20, only .01 ahead of Allison Schmitt.

Haughey, who won the 100 free last night, posted her fastest swim of the year which ranks her second among American women behind Katie Ledecky.

Schmitt finished second in 1:57.21 while Leah Smith was close behind in 1:57.41 for third.

Gabby Deloof (1:58.43), Cierra Runge (1:58.87), Catie Deloof (2:00.25), Geena Freriks (2:01.17) and Kaersten Meitz (2:01.48) rounded out the top eight.

Men’s 200 Free

Blake Pieroni held nothing back in the men’s 200 free on the third night of the 2018 TYR Pro Swim Series in Columbus. He took it out over one second faster than the rest of the field and held on for the win in 1:48.08.

That marks a new season-best for Pieroni and moves him up to the second-fastest American of the season behind Jack Conger. He adds this to his 100 free title from last night.

His teammate Zane Grothe grabbed second in 1:48.83 while Grant House took third in 1:49.13.

Felix Auboeck (1:49.28), Zach Apple (1:49.88), Patrick Callan (1:49.91), Sam Steele (1:50.13) and Paul Delakis (1:52.15) completed the A final.
