NEW COMMIT: Brookfield, Wis. native Michael Linnihan has announced his verbal commitment to swim for Northwestern University beginning in the fall of 2020.

A freestyle and butterfly specialist, Linnihan owns five Summer Juniors standards and swims year-round with Elmbrook Swim Club. He capped off a fantastic summer season by finishing fourth in the 100m fly at Junior Nationals where he also placed 20th in the 50m free. Last winter, he raced to 18th in the 100 free at Juniors West en route to earning 100% best times before going on to earn gold in the 200 free at the Wisconsin SCY Championships.

Also competing for Brookfield Central High School, Linnihan is a four-time Wisconsin DI State Championship finalist. The USA Swimming Scholastic All-American won the 100/200 free combo as a junior after grabbing bronze in both of those events during his sophomore season.

He told Swimming World:

“I am thrilled to announce my commitment to continue both my swim and academic careers at Northwestern University. This would be impossible if I did not have such amazing parents, family, coaches, teammates, and friends. Thank you so much for your support. Go Cats!”

His best times include:

  • 50 free – 20.60
  • 100 free – 44.88
  • 200 free – 1:38.43
  • 100 fly – 49.31
  • 200 fly – 1:50.36

Linnihan will add valuable depth to Northwestern’s lineup when he arrives on campus at the start of the 2020-21 season, and he’ll add his talents to a freestyle group that’ll be led by Liam Gately, Andrew Zhang and Ezra Mizgala. He’ll also join Jacob Rosner in Evanston next year.
