LAUSANNE, Switzerland, December 20. CROATIAN swimmer Marko Strahija, provisionally suspended by FINA earlier this month, may have tested positive for Human Chorionic Gonadotropin due to a testicular tumor. Strahija tested positive for hCG in an out-of-competition test in November. The drug is a hormone produced by women during pregnancy and primarily is used to maintain progesterone.
Strahika's doctor told the Croatian newspaper, Slobodna Dalmacija, that the swimmer's illness caused the positive test. The silver medalist in the 200 backstroke at the 2002 World Short Course Championships, Strahija was first suspended in 2003, when the illness is first suspected to have appeared. He was suspended in November for another positive test.
