Texas Tops Indiana in 1-vs.-2 Dual Meet; Texas Women Sweep
Rex Maurer won two events on Friday as Texas beat Indiana 177.5-122.5 in a matchup of the top two teams in the CSCAA preseason dual-meet poll.
Both teams also scored wins over Northwestern by 224-76 margins at the tri-meet in Bloomington Friday afternoon. On the women’s side, Texas beat Indiana 188-112 to augment a 250-50 win over Northwestern. Indiana defeated the Wildcats, 241-59.

The meet at the Counsilman Billingsley Aquatic Center was swum in short-course meters as a prep for the World Championships ahead in December.
Maurer led the way for Texas with a win in the 200 freestyle in 1:44.08 in a 1-2 finish with teammate Laon Kim’s 1:44.12. Maurer also claimed the 400 free in 3:44.05.
Texas struck at what is usually Indiana’s strong points. Texas claimed a 1-2-3 finish in the men’s 100 breaststroke, led by Campbell McKean in a time of 57.34. Nate Germonprez and Luka Mladenovic followed.
Texas also swept both diving events, with Luke Forester winning both. He scored 360.15 points on 1-meter for a 1-2 result with Jacob Jones, then won 3-meter with a score of 386.95, just edging Indiana’s Jacob Schade by three points.
Rafael Fente-Damers won the 100 free, getting the better of Indiana’s Mikkel Lee after Lee had gone 21.54 to win the 50 by .13 over the Frenchman. Fente-Damers won the 100 in 47.15.
Kuzey Tuncelli won the 800 free to start the meet in 7:42.39. Mladenovic added a third-place finish in the 200 individual behind Maurer, who was second, to thirds in both breaststroke events. Will Modglin won the 100 backstroke in 50.45, ahead of Owen McDonald of Indiana, with whom he tied for second in the 200 back behind the victorious 1:53.77 of Northwestern’s Oliver Kos.
Texas won both relays, going 1:33.20 in the 200 medley relay to edge Indiana by 0.15 seconds. That team was comprised of Modglin, Germonprez, Rowan Cox and Fente-Damers. The Longhorns finished the meet by capturing the 400 free relay in 3;09.41 via Fente-Damers, Germonprez, Modglin and Kim.
Josh Bey and Raekown Noel won two events each for Indiana. Bey claimed the 200 breast in 2:04.28 ahead of McKeen, then won the 200 IM over Maurer in 1:55.11.
Noel did the butterfly double, winning the 200 in 1:52.02 and the 100 in 50.97.
The women’s race was similarly close, though Texas used its depth to eventually pull away.
Piper Enge was the star for Texas. She swam breaststroke on the winning 200 medley relay that set the tone with a time of 1:44:33 to edge Indiana by 0.05 seconds. Enge outdueled Anita Bottazzo to win the 100 breast in 1:04.63, winning by .11 seconds. Then she led a podium sweep in the 200 breast that effectively sealed the meet, her time of 2:24.12 leading Campbell Chase and Angie Coe to the wall.
Chase was third in the 100 breast and won the 200 IM in 2:08.90. The latter was another 1-2-3, with Audrey Derivaux second and Coe third. Derivaux was also second in the 200 fly and the 200 back.
Jillian Cox won the 800 free in 8:13.56 and claimed the 400 free in 4:02.78.
Texas swept both diving events, with Alejandra Estudillo defeating Lily Witte in both. Estudillo eased to victory on 1-meter by 30 points with a score of 336.55, then tallied 370.75 to claim 3-meter by 25 points.
Texas bookended the meet with relay wins. Lillian Nesty, Enge, Mena Boardman and Eva Okaro went 1:44.33 on the opening medley. Nesty and Okaro joined Erin Gemmell and Nikolett Padar to produce a winning time of 3:31.45 in the 400 free relay.
The individual standout of the meet was Indiana’s Liberty Clark. She won three events, claiming the 200 free in 1:53.00 ahead of Padar and Gemmell, besting Okaro by .26 in the 50 to win in 23.92 and routing Gemmell in the 100 to win in 51.61, a margin of 1.6 seconds on the field.
Alex Shackell swept butterfly for the Hoosiers, going 56.57 in the 100 and 2:03.96 in the 200, more than two seconds ahead of Derivaux. Miranda Grana was untouched in backstroke, winning the 100 in 56.93 and the 200 in 2:03.68.
