Six veterans of international competition were picked by their peers as team captains for the American pool swimming team competing in the world championships.

Cammile Adams, Elizabeth Beisel and Jessica Hardy will lead the women’s team, while Anthony Ervin, Matt Grevers and David Plummer will be team captains for the men’s team.

All six have extensive world championship experience, with Ervin swimming on his fourth world championship team. He was part of the 2001, 2003 and 2013 teams, winning medals in 2001 and 2013. Grevers will be defending his world championship title in the 100 backstroke, with Plummer looking to return to the medal stand in that event after earning silver in 2013.

Beisel and Hardy have impressive world championships credentials. Beisel won the 400 IM in 2011 and bronze in the same event in 2013, in addition to a 200 back bronze in 2009. Hardy broke the world record in the 100 breast in the 2005 world championships and has won 10 world championship medals. Adams will swim the 200 butterfly in Kazan and was in the championship final of that event in 2013.

The U.S. squad has been training in Croatia for a week, and will depart for Russia Wednesday as they adjust to Kazan and the competition pool ahead of the meet start on Sunday.
