On the plus side, Whitten said the number of college swimming programs in the United States has increased in the past two years. To keep the numbers increasing, Whitten and the CSCAA are working hard with athletic directors to keep struggling college programs alive.
Since taking over the role in the CSCAA, Whitten said he has been more "diplomatic" than he was as editor-in-chief of Swimming World Magazine to make sure he is able to continue working with administrators.
One of the biggest stories involving collegiate swimming is the talk of combining national championships in one location in the spring. Whitten talks in this interview about his work to support this endeavor because the sport needs a change to stay vital and functioning.
