SYDNEY, Australia, August 16. ACCORDING to a report in the Daily Telegraph, Swimming Australia is expected to adopt an illicit drug policy, although out-of-competition testing is not anticipated to be included in the initial installation of the code. Swimming Australia plans to educate its swimmers on illicit drugs and eventually could test athletes outside of competition.
Glenn Tasker, the Chief Executive of Swimming Australia, indicated that he would gauge swimmers' reactions to the policy. He suggested that some athletes would be against the policy. Grant Hackett, the world-record holder in the 800 and 1500 freestyles, is behind the plan, but prefers that energy is first put toward stopping the use of performance-enhancing drugs, then stopping the use of illicit drugs.
