Suspicions Growing Around Robbery of Lochte, Feigen, Conger, and Bentz; Investigations Continue
Police investigations into the alleged robbery of Ryan Lochte, Jimmy Feigen, Jack Conger, and Gunnar Bentz continue after Conger and Bentz were pulled off a plane bound for the U.S. last night.
A Brazilian police officer has recently come forward and told ABC News that “one of the swimmers was seen on CCTV footage breaking down the door to the bathroom at the gas station and fighting with a security guard” on the night of alleged robbery.
Dan Abrams, chief legal analyst for ABC News, explained that this could be classified as more of a political investigation explaining to ABC’s Robin Roberts that “if this were a normal person who had made a police report that wasn’t true they wouldn’t be pulling potential witnesses off of a plane.”
Abrams continued by stating that it is a crime in Brazil to file a false police report and that the high profile of the swimmers ups the intensity with which Brazilian police are investigating.
Gabriel Elizondo, a correspondent for Al Jazeera English, has been live tweeting the developments of the investigation confirming the Brazilian police report that the bathroom door was indeed broken, as well as commenting that the group fled before police arrived.
Feigen is still in Rio and has been reported as cooperating with the police.
