PHOENIX, Arizona, November 23. COMPETITION will be taking a back seat this weekend in the United States to turkey and pumpkin pie as we celebrate Thanksgiving, but Germany will be holding its short course nationals this weekend to pick the squad for the European championships.
Paul Biedermann will headline competition on the men’s side, with his girlfriend Britta Steffen looking to get back in form in time to defend her Olympic titles in the 50 and 100 freestyles next year. Marco di Carli, who was at one point the fastest 100 freestyler in the world in 2011, will race as well.
The European short course championships will be held in Poland from December 8-11. Many of the top names who will be at that meet will then hop on a plane to Atlanta to compete in the Duel in the Pool. The United States will once again race against some of the top swimmers from Europe. In 2009, the USA dominated the meet, setting multiple world records.
