NEW COMMIT: Olympic Trials qualifier Sophie Duncan of Bethesda, Md. has given Stanford University their third verbal commitment for the 2022-23 season and beyond in the same number of days.

She will join Kristi McEnroe and Gigi Johnson on The Farm as a member of the Class of 2026.

Regarding her commitment, she said:

“I am so excited and grateful to announce my verbal commitment to swim and study at Stanford University!! Thank you to everyone who has helped me over the past 17 years on my swimming and academic journey. I could not have done this without the love and support from my family, coaches, teammates, teachers, and friends. I can’t wait to continue my athletic and academic pursuits at the farm ? ❤️ !”

An extremely versatile swimmer, Duncan trains year-round with Nation’s Capital Swim Club and placed 30th in both the 200m and 400m IM at Olympic Trials Wave II last month in Omaha. She finished 12th in the 400m IM at the Toyota U.S. Open in November before going on to win that event at the 18&U Winter Championships – Potomac Valley.

In Summer 2019, Duncan raced to eighth in the 200m back at the NCSA Championships and earned silver in the 400m IM at Potomac Valley Seniors.

Her best times include:

  • 200 free – 1:48.79
  • 500 free – 4:45.74
  • 1000 free – 9:49.76
  • 1650 free – 16:33.46
  • 200 back – 1:57.98
  • 200 fly – 1:58.22
  • 200 IM – 1:59.56
  • 400 IM – 4:09.80

A rising senior at Holton Arms High School, Duncan is a four-time Washington Metropolitan Prep School League Championship finalist. The USA Swimming Scholastic All-American collected silver in both the 200 IM and 500 free as a junior while taking second in the 200/500 free during her sophomore season.

Duncan will make an immediate impact in many different events. She would’ve scored in the A-final of the 200 fly, 400 IM, and 500 free as well as the B-final of the 200 IM, 200 free, and 200 back at the 2021 Pac-12 Championships. She also would’ve placed in the top-5 of the mile.

Stanford’s incoming class this fall includes Aurora RoghairAmy TangAnna ShawSamantha TadderTorri Huske and Meghan Lynch, as well as diver Lauren Burch.
