Speed in 200 Freestyle Relay at an All-Time High as NCAA Championships Beckon

How good is your memory? If it’s solid, take a trip back to the 2009 NCAA Championships. That year, among other records, featured an incredible 1:14.08 clocking from Auburn University in the 200-yard freestyle relay. The squad for that record performance included Jakob Andkjaer (18.89), Gideon Louw (18.33), Kohlton Norys (18.67) and Matt Targett (18.19), and each of those spectacular splits was necessary as Stanford fired off a 1:14.22 clocking for runnerup honors.

For more than a decade, Auburn’s collegiate record comfortably endured, until Florida unleashed a time of 1:13.35 at the 2023 edition of the NCAA Champs. The Gators’ performance didn’t just erase Auburn’s mark from the record book, it opened a new era in the event. In what way? Well, in addition to Florida, four other programs own school records faster than Auburn’s formerly vaunted standard.

The sprint-freestyle scene has undoubtedly risen to never-before-seen heights. Caeleb Dressel and Jordan Crooks have gone sub-18 in the 50 freestyle. Multiple swimmers have checked in with 17-point relay performances for a 50 freestyle leg. The NCAA record in the 200 freestyle relay, as least for now, stands at 1:12.80. Yep, sub-1:13 – thanks to what Tennessee delivered at last year’s SEC Championships.

We used to view 1:14.08 with a cockeyed glance. It was a startling time, and for many years, felt out of reach. But over time, the gap to 1:14-low narrowed and eventually, the door was kicked down. There wasn’t exactly a bum rush through the entrance, since going that type of mark requires four speedsters and no holes in the lineup. But several programs have been able to produce the necessary depth.

When Florida first dipped under 1:14, it had company. Cal also achieved the feat, going 1:13.82. Two years later, Tennessee went sub-1:13 on a pair of occasions, highlighted by its 1:12.80 record. Over the weekend, Arizona State registered a best of 1:12.98, a performance that followed several other eye-opening efforts in the past few years. Meanwhile, North Carolina State won the 2026 ACC crown in the event with a school record of 1:14.02.

Now that the conference season has concluded, all attention will shift to Atlanta, the site of the NCAA Championships. What will it take to win the 200 freestyle relay? Likely will be a record. We’ll see. If nothing else, the speed in the event has reached stunning levels.
