Smit’s National Record in 200 I.M. is One of Many Highlights from New York State Meet

BUFFALO, New York, November 23. WHEN Julia Smit, a senior from Mount Sinai High School, broke the national public school record in the 200 individual medley over the weekend at the New York State Championships, it was obviously the top swim of the meet. After all, her 1:58.29 in the prelims dipped below both the independant and public school records set by Olympians Kristen Caverly and Natalie Coughlin.

But, Smit's swim was only part of a sensational meet. Smit pulled a double by also winning the 100 back in 55.15 and went 1:58.99 in the final of the 200 I.M. She was the only double event winner in the meet.

In other impressive results, Erin McGraw took the win in the 200 free with a 1:51.36 and Kim Larson sprinted to victory in the 50 free, going 24.05. The 500 free went to Aleksa Akersfelds with a 4:55.59. In the 100s, Keri Masterson won the 100 fly in 55.98, Katrice Ewanich took the 100 free in 51.57 and Lindsey Norberg won the 100 breast in 1:03.72.
