The 10th heat of the women’s 50 freestyle at the FINA world championships featured three ladies with a chance to win a medal in tomorrow night’s final: Sarah Sjostrom, Arianna Vanderpool-Wallace and Simone Manuel.

Manuel said she liked having those two in the heat with her, knowing that if she stayed with them that she would make it through safely to the semifinals. She did that, qualifying 11th with a 24.91.

“I wanted to go out and stay with them as best as I could,” Manuel said. “I’m pretty happy with the morning swim.”

After placing sixth in the 100 free final with a 53.93, she said she had to put the race behind her in order to have a clear head before the splash-and-dash intensity of the 50 free.

“I couldn’t really think too much about my 100 free,”she said. “I wasn’t that happy with that swim, but I’m getting a lot of experience and learning a lot about my 100 and all of my international competitions.”

Manuel has been a huge disappointment during these championships. American sprinting is in the dark ages.
