NEW COMMIT: The University of Maryland – Baltimore County (UMBC) has received a new verbal commitment for the fall of 2019, this time from Hollister, Calif. breaststroker Mackenzie Thomas. She will join Halle Gordon as a member of the class of 2023.

Thomas swims year-round with Santa Clara Swim Club and placed seventh in the 100m breast at Far Westerns and recorded a lifetime best at Santa Clara Futures this summer. She competed in a trio of events at WCAB Seniors last winter and raced both breaststroke distances at Carlsbad Sectionals in March. Also swimming for Valley Christian High School, Thomas competed in the 100 fly and 100 breast at CIF-Central Coast Sections during her junior season and was part of her team’s 4×50 and 4×100 free relays.

She told Swimming World:

“I chose UMBC because the swimmers were incredibly welcoming and it provides a great variety of majors to choose from!”

Her best times include:

  • 100 breast – 1:07.67
  • 200 breast – 2:29.64
  • 50 free – 25.18

When she suits up for the Retrievers next fall, she’ll join a young but talented breaststroke group that includes Lily McCoy and Emma Bridges and she would’ve scored in the B-final of both distances at the 2018 America East Championships. UMBC, who produced USA Swimming National Team breaststroker Emily Escobedo, finished second at last season’s conference meet.
