Rutgers Sets Medley Relay Record, But Princeton Takes Cannon Trophy

Rutgers set a new record in the 200 medley relay, logged four performances among the all-time top 10 and won nine of the day’s 16 events, but it was Princeton retaining the Cannon Trophy on Saturday at the Rutgers Aquatics Center. The Tigers won the meet, 159.5-140.05.

For Princeton, Charlotte Martinkus won 1-meter diving (294.08). Meg Wheeler won the 200 backstroke (1:57.16) and 200 IM (2:01.84). Nikki Venema won the 50 freestyle (23.11) and the 100 free (49.68). Heidi Smithwick won the 100 butterfly (55.11).

The 200 medley relay team broke the Rutgers record set by last year’s podium-placing team at the Big Ten Championships with a time of 1:39.32.

Graduate student Rachel Kimmel, who was a part of the 200 medley relay, also moved further up the all-time times with the third-best time in Rutgers history in the 200 breast and fifth-fastest time in the 100 breast.

Rutgers graduate student Madison Murtagh also moved up a spot to third all-time in the 1000 freestyle.

Freshman Viktoriia Kostromina entered the 200 fly list at seventh.

The 200 medley relay team of Alice ScarabelliRachel KimmelSofia Maksimova and Sofia Chichaikina set a new Rutgers record with a first-place finish of 1:39.32.  They bested the previous record of 1:39.38 set by Scarabelli, Tina Celik, Maksimova and Giulia Ghidini in an eighth-place performance at the 2022 Big Ten Championships. The time is also currently the third fastest in the Big Ten.

Murtaugh moved up the Rutgers all-time top 10 for the third time this season with her winning 1000 free time of 9:54.20. The graduate student bettered her previous mark by 4.80 seconds to place her named third all-time. Her time is also the third-fastest in the Big Ten.

Murtagh also came in first in the 500 free hitting the wall in 4:54.21 with a 3.88-second lead.

College news

Kimmel was the top performer in both the 100 breast and 200 breast for Rutgers. In the 100 breast, she took .49 seconds off her previous top time of the season to clock in at 1:01.60 and move up one spot on the top times list to fifth. Later in the meet, Kimmel clocked in at 2:13.62 in the 200 breast shaving 2.21 seconds off her time to move up five spots to third all-time “On The Banks”. The graduate student also finished third in the 200 IM in 2:04.48.

Viktoriia Kostromina raced to a time of 2:00.73 in the 200 fly for the seventh fastest time in the Rutgers record book and over a two-second margin of victory. Her swim marked a 2.13-second improvement from her previous best time.

Sofia Chichaikina won the 200 free logging a season-best 1:48.41.

Alice Scarabelli was the top finisher in the 100 back posting 53.79, also a season-best.

Holly Prasanto won 3-meter for the Scarlet Knights posting a score of 302.40.
