Nathan Adrian will get the chance to defend his title in the men’s 100 free in Rio. The 2012 Olympic gold medalist stopped the clock in tonight’s final in 47.72 to qualify for his third Olympic Games.

He won by over half a second and his time is the second fastest in the world this year.

Adrian won gold in this event in London and was a member of the victorious 4×100 medley relay and second-place 4×100 free relay. In Beijing, he won gold in the 4×100 free relay as a prelim swimmer.

He said that it’s hard to stay on top since sprinting keeps getting faster and faster and said he thinks people underestimate what the Americans can offer.

The three-time Olympian talked to the media about training under head coach Dave Durden and what keeps him motivated.
