Portuguese Nationals Heat Up On Day Two
Day two of the 2015 Portuguese Nationals gave way to more fast swimming in Coimbra. The Portuguese national records remained elusive last night, but they’re still in danger of being broken this weekend.
Tomas Miguel Veloso won the 400-meter IM with a final time of 4:24.27. Second-place finisher Thomas Paine held the lead until relinquishing it to Veloso on the breaststroke leg. Paine touched to a 4:25.57. Nuno Rafael Alves ended up third in 4:32.44.
Victoria Kaminskaya just missed her national record in the women’s 400-meter IM with her winning time of 4:46.33. Ines Neto Rocha clocked the second-fastest time, a junior national record 5:01.00. Giovanna Vaz Vargas finished behind her with a 5:01.52.
Portuguese national record holder Luis Emanuel Vaz (1:50.28) narrowly won the men’s 200-meter free ahead of Mario Alexandre Pereira (1:50..36). Miguel Duarte Nascimento made the podium with a 1:51.10.
Rebecca Guy busted out a 2:02.15 to win the women’s 200-meter free, just ahead of Christina Munkholm’s 2:02.31. Diana Margarida Duraes took third with a 2:03.52.
In the men’s 50-meter breast, Christopher Steeples took the crown with a 28.61. Talal Mrabet silvered in 28.97, while Jolann Bovey swam a 29.05 to get third.
On the women’s side, Maria Madalena Silva won the 50-meter breast with a 33.17. Catarina Costa Sequeira posted a 33.27, and Claudia Ferreira Borges rounded out the top three with a 33.82.
Nathan Keith Theodoris crushed the men’s 200-meter back in 2:01.92. Rory McEvoy was a distant second with a 2:04.70, while Joao Alexandre Vital fell to third in 2:06.21.
Jessica Fullalove won the women’s 200-meter back in wire-to-wire fashion en route to a 2:10.82. Sarah Bro trailed in second place to a 2:12.67. Francisca Gomes Azevedo dropped to third with a 2:16.87.
