Penn State vs. Rutgers
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pennsylvania, January 25. PENN State women¹s senior swimmers won seven events in their final home meet as the Nittany Lions upended Rutgers 109-58 on Saturday at the McCoy Natatorium.
Karie Haglund, Kelly Nelson, Sarah Baker and Michelle Myers each won two individual events. The three seniors and junior also were victorious in the 200-yard medley relay.
Haglund took the 200 breaststroke event, touching the wall in 2:16.47 11 seconds faster than any opponent. Haglund finished first in the 100 breaststroke in a time of 1:02.57, followed by Caitlin Meehan, who swam the race in 1:05.02.
Nelson took the 100 butterfly by three full seconds (55.32) and secured a time of 1:59.40, 14-hundreths of a second below the NCAA B¹ time standard, in a victory in the 200 butterfly. Alex Young tapped in behind Nelson in the 200 butterfly at 2:04.67.
Baker edged Kaitlin O¹Brien in the 200 freestyle by fractions of a second, coming in at 1:50.21. She owned first in the 500 freestyle race as she finished in 4:58.83.
Myers claimed first in the 50 freestyle, in a time of 23.62, and the 100 backstroke, with a 56.35 tally.
Kailey Morris also took two individual events during the final home meet of the season. She dominated the 1000 freestyle field, swimming to a 10:04.34 mark.
Penn State¹s other event winner was Lindsey DeForrest, who, at 51.42, finished ahead of Rutgers¹ Kasey Kesses in the 100 freestyle.
The Nittany Lions return to Columbus, Ohio to face conference foe Ohio State on Jan. 30-31.
