IRVINE, California, August 20. IRVINE must be one of Elizabeth Beisel's favorite places to swim. She first came to prominence in the sport by making the U.S. World roster as a 13-year-old at the 2006 U.S. Nationals here in Irvine, then she returned four years later as a seasoned 18-year-old veteran to win two gold medals so far.
Tonight, she touched out teammate Elizabeth Pelton, 2:07.83 to 2:08.10, to win the women's 200 back after winning the women's 400 IM last night. Beisel moved to third in the world rankings, behind Elizabeth Simmonds (2:06.79) and Pelton (2:07.48). The triumph returned the title to the U.S. after a one-meet stay in Japan when Reiko Nakamura won in 2005 with a 2:08.86. Margaret Hoelzer is the last American to win with a 2:11.00 in 2002.
Australia's Belinda Hocking finished third overall tonight in 2:08.60, off her fourth-ranked season best of 2:07.89.
Japan's Shiho Sakai (2:09.12), New Zealand's Melissa Ingram (2:09.98), Canada's Genevieve Cantin (2:11.56), Canada's Lauren Lavigna (2:11.89) and Japan's Marie Kamimura (2:12.21) finished fourth through eighth in the event.
USA's Missy Franklin clocked a personal-record time of 2:08.05 to win the B final. She crushed her previous PR of 2:09.16, and skyrocketed into the top 10 in the world.
