With the Olympic Trials about eight months away, expect to see many of the top Olympic hopefuls racing often in the United States and abroad. The first stop on the Arena Pro Swim Series is in Minneapolis next week, and pretty much all of the notable athletes on USA Swimming’s national team will be racing for the first time since the summer championships.

The Minneapolis meet is often held in short course yards to accommodate the college swimmers who attend, but the Olympic Trials takes precedence, and this meet will be in long course meters from November 12-14. Some of the top athletes will be coming off a long stint at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, and could put in some quick performances as their bodies acclimate to the sea level conditions.

We’ll get to see Katie Ledecky and Ryan Lochte in their first races since winning individual gold medals at the world championships. Michael Phelps will be in attendance, about three months after he posted three world-leading times at the U.S. nationals.

David Plummer, who is currently earning some big money overseas in the FINA World Cup circuit, will highlight the backstroke events. Plummer was a standout at Minnesota and trains in the Minneapolis area, so expect a big ovation when his name is announced.

Though racing is the primary agenda for the top professional athletes, earning some prize money will also be of major importance. The top point scorer through the entire series in each gender will receive a one-year lease for a BMW. Caitlin Leverenz and Conor Dwyer are currently enjoying their leases after winning the previous two Pro Swim Series rankings, and are slated to race in Minneapolis to try for three in a row.

Psych sheets will be released in a few days.
