North Carolina State Champ Mere Whelehan Pledges 2025 Verbal to Lady Vols
NEW COMMIT: The University of Tennessee has picked up another impressive verbal commitment for Fall 2025, this time from U.S. Open qualifier Meredith “Mere” Whelehan of Cary, North Carolina.
She will join Avery Luedke and Lilly Robertson as a member of the Lady Vols’ Class of 2029.
She told Swimming World:
“I’m so incredibly grateful to announce my verbal commitment to swim and study at the University of Tennessee!! I’d like to thank my parents, siblings, coaches, teammates and friends for all of their support throughout this process. A special thanks to Matt Kredich for giving me this opportunity to be a lady vol🍊 Go Vols”
A rangy freestyler, Whelehan dos her club swimming with TAC Titans and finaled in the 200m free and 400m free this past summer at Ocala Futures. She earned silver in the 200 free and 500 free at Cary Sectionals back in March, earning respective 11th and 17th place finishes in those events at Juniors East in December.
Her best times include:
- 50 free – 22.98
- 100 free – 50.34
- 200 free – 1:47.43
- 500 free – 4:48.90
- 1000 free – 9:58.74
Currently a junior at Green Hope High School, Whelehan was the 100 free and 200 free champion at the 2023 North Carolina 4A State Championships. She earned gold and bronze, respectively, in those events during her freshman season.
