Germany’s Marco Koch knows there is a lot of work to do if he wants to win the 200 breaststroke at next year’s Olympic Games. But first, he’s going to take care of a major craving.

“First of all, I want to go to Burger King or McDonald’s tonight and celebrate,” he said. “And then, I’m going (to Turkey) on holidays for a couple of weeks.”

Koch deserves a night of junk food. He beat longtime rival Daniel Gyurta, who was looking to become the first to win the 200 breast four times in a row. He managed to beat a talented field that also included American Kevin Cordes in a breakthrough performance, and Japan’s Yasuhiro Koseki, who challenged the world record in the semifinals.

Koch had a goal of breaking the world record of 2:07.01 in the final. At the very least, he was hoping to beat his personal best of 2:07.47 from last year’s European championships. But, he had an issue with food poisoning before the meet that he thinks might have affected his performance.

“I was expecting that somebody’s going to break the record,” he said. “I was expecting to go faster than my German record, but it’s OK. I’m a bit disappointed with the time, but it’s OK that it was enough to win.”

Swimming World also recorded Koch’s German-language interview with the media after his swim. We present that in its entirety for our German-speaking readers.
