Nebraska Swimming Tops Iowa in Big Ten Showdown

Six Huskers swam to individual titles on Friday, powering Nebraska swimming to a 175-123 victory over the Hawkeyes in Iowa City in Big Ten action.

Big Ten: Nebraska highlights

Lexi Kucera collected a pair of individual wins in the 100 (51.91) and 200 freestyle (1:52.39) in the Big Ten showdown, while also teaming up with Gabby DonahueEmily Haimes and Giulia Marchi in the 400 freestyle relay for the win with a 3:29.33. Kucera, a junior from Hutchinson, Minn., also notched a runner-up finish in the 100 butterfly with a 57.06.

Shannon Stott led a Big Red top-three sweep in the 200 butterfly, finishing in 2:04.25. Barton clocked a 2:06.41 to finish second and Berkeley Livingston took third with a 2:08.16. Stott added a strong finish in the 500 freestyle, swimming to first with a 4:59.67. Jorgenson finished in second behind Stott to clock a 5:00.64 and finish as runner-up. The freshman from Aberdeen, S.D. cruised to a 1,000 freestyle victory with a season-best 10:11.44 and capped off her night by taking third in the 200 IM with a 2:08.76.

Haimes and Marchi added another Big Ten relay victory on the night, teaming up with JoJo Randby and Madesyn Ronquillio in the 200 medley relay (1:44.65). Haimes won the 100 butterfly in convincing fashion with a 55.72, while adding a runner-up finish in the 50 freestyle with a 24.10.

Ronquillio headlined the backstroke events, winning the 200 backstroke in 2:03.34 and taking second in the 100 backstroke with a 56.04.

Big Ten: Iowa highlights

Iowa tallied six individual wins in its first Big Ten meet of the year. Sophomore diver Makayla Hughbanks took gold with career best performances off both the 1-meter (288.15) and 3-meter (301.25) springboards.

Senior Kennedy Gilbertson won both the 50 free (24.09) and 100 back (55.44), upping the Wisconsin native’s season total victories to three. Graduate student Sheridan Schreiber came in first in the 100 breast (1:03.74), and freshman Sabina Kupcova checked off Iowa’s final win of the night in the 200 IM (2:07.00).
